What is the most important relationship in your life? Is it with your significant other? Your child? Your parent? Your sibling? Your close friend? Happiness expert and author of Happy Bitch, Keryl Pesce says there is one relationship that ranks even higher, and many of us are screwing it up every single day without realizing its importance or impact. Its your relationship with YOU!
“The majority of us fail to realize the most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself. We talk smack to ourselves inside our heads, saying crap we would never dream of saying to those we love most. We put our wants and needs last, make no time to do what we want, shelve our passions and then look around at our lives scratching our heads wondering how we got here.
Pesce suggests a few simple steps to make today to transform your life:
2 – Be aware of negative self talk. When you catch yourself putting yourself down or doubting yourself, you’re literally programming yourself for failure and unhappiness. Stop. You deserve better. Change direction and think in positive terms. What would you say to your closest friend, child or parent?
3 – Make your happiness a higher priority. Lose the guilt. A happier you will pay off in every area of your life and will rub off on the people around you. The happiest and most magnetic people you meet do this.
4 – Take a break. Carve out time to relax and unwind. You will be amazed at the results of even five minutes of slowing down your thoughts.
5 – Exercise. It’s time to look at exercise and a new way. Consider it a treat to your body and mind. Forget the high-pressure, results-based goals for once and do it for how it makes you feel. Find a way to do something you enjoy that raises your physical activity – gardening, riding a bike, walking – they all raise your heart rate and release endorphins.
6 – Add whole, fresh foods to your diet. You don’t have to deprive yourself of foods you love, just throw in some more antioxidant-rich foods like greens, berries, great summer salads. Give your body what it needs and it will reward you.
Living your happiest life, enjoying great relationships, good health and financial success are not the luck of the draw. They’re dictated by you and the quality of the relationship you have with yourself.
Have a “Be Nice to Me Day”. Buy yourself flowers, catch up with a girlfriend, or even write yourself a note. You deserve it!
